I know that thought may not be much consolation to you but I truly feel that our pets know right until the end how much they are loved and to be there    right until the end, making that sacrifice so they no longer suffer helping them through that journey...it really is meaningful, emotional and above all a loving experience.  I had a cat for 13 years that passed away 2 years ago this June.  I was DEVASTATED!!  Even now when I think of him I get emotional.  I think most people, at least those who have never experienced the loss of a pet, can never truly understand what a heart-wrenching loss it can be. I read a poem called the rainbow bridge..look it up.  It is sooo beautiful and it really gave me comfort and hope for a future with my loving pet.  I hope it helps you too!!   BTW..our Schnitzel still has his balls...it's the least I can do for him, right?!?!
